Useful Tips for Maintenance of Hand Knotted Woollen Carpets.
Your choice of 100% shorn wool rug is the right option of purchasing a carpet that is easy to maintain and meets all requirements for a modern home accessory. Natural fibres such as shorn wool can breathe and absorb humidity which they then release again into atmosphere in a dry interior. Our carpets are made with the technology of hand knotting and therefore each piece is an original in itself.
Slight deviations in colour shades and design reflect the true genuineness of each carpet. We would like to give you a few practical tips which will make the care of your shorn wool carpet easier.
Basic Rules:
- Each carpet loses hair every 3-4 months owing to the last production phase, when the carpet deep pile is shorn - however this is not considered a defect. As soon as the carpet is in common use and good care is taken of the rug, it will stop losing hair after 3-4 months.
- Flat, even and dry underlay is necessary for a long life of your carpet.
- Simple vacuuming in the direction of the pile without rotating brush and beater bar is sufficient for removing all dirt from the surface of the carpet.
- Pressure applied only to some points/places on the carpet should be avoided - as is often the case with heavy pieces of furniture.
- Carpet underlays offered for sale in shops match the colour of the respective flooring, avoid the sliding of the carpet and its "roaming" on the floor. At the same time you will avoid deformations on the carpet and will protect the back side against rubbing for example on tiles with sharp edges and broad joints.
- In order to avoid pressure on some points/places of your carpet, you should regularly turn the carpet.
- Avoid direct sunshine as this could result in changes of the colour shade.
- Never put containers/flowerpots with wet soil containing water directly on the carpet. Wet places on the carpet with no air circulation could damage your carpet.
- Shorn wool is elastic due to grease which it contains and which helps to keep the carpet pile flat. Protect this quality by putting protective rings under thin furniture legs.
- When removing stains from your carpet, do not please use "carpet shampoos", as the wool would lose the dirt repelling grease.
- Our carpets made from shorn wool are not protected. However this is not necessary because the moths would not feel well when moving in the carpet in the light of the room. Only when the carped is stored in a dark room for a longer period of time, we recommend spreading the carpet with lavender and roll it with the pile inside which protects it against months.
Removal of Stains:
- If something happens and you stain the carpet, act immediately! Do not let the dirt soak into the carpet. Good shorn wool has a natural content of grease repelling dirt and moisture.
- Sponge the dirt preferably with an absorbent towel and weight it down accordingly. Never rub or wipe the carpet!
- Before you start with the removal of stains, verify the colour of the pile on a spot that cannot be seen.
- Stain remover should be applied on a cotton cloth that does not lose hair. Proceed always from the inner edge of the stain towards its centre.
- Stains left behind by protein or oily substance can be removed using cold or lukewarm suds or wool detergent.
- Chewing gum must be first carefully hardened with a freezing spray and then crushed with a hammer and the leftovers can bet then brushed away and vacuumed.
- In case of extensive soiling, you should consider cleaning in a specialised chemical cleaning shop.
